The fascinating history of urban transport in Thessaloniki

The beginnings of public transport in Thessaloniki (1879-1957)

  • 1879: Concession of public transport in Thessaloniki to the Belgian Company, which introduced horse-drawn carriages with 4 to 5 seats.
  • 1905: New horse-drawn carriages with 15 to 20 seats put into circulation on railway tracks.
  • 1930-1935: Appearance of the first buses, which will quickly compete with the tram.
  • 1940: The city has 150 40-seat buses owned by private motorists.
  • 1957: Creation of the Urban Transport Organization of Thessaloniki (O.A.S.TH.) by the merger of the Belgian Company and private bus companies. The company exclusively provides the city's urban transport services. At that time, O.A.S.Th. had 283 buses of 60 and 80 seats. At the same time, the Tramways were withdrawn from circulation (they ran in Thessaloniki from 1908 to 1957).

Development and modernization of O.A.S.TH. (1957-2000)

  • 1960s: Expansion of the bus network and increase in passenger numbers.
  • Between 1963 and 1977, the arrival of 283 new 100-seat buses were launched, more modern and comfortable.
  • In 1978, O.A.S.TH acquired the first articulated buses in Greece, with 150 seats.
  • In 1979, urban transport was extended to the suburban area of Thessaloniki, with the merger of part of KTEL Thessalonikis.
  • 1980s: Implementation of an electronic ticketing system.
  • 1990s: Creation of new bus lines and extension of the network to the outskirts of Thessaloniki.
  • Modernization and challenges of Thessaloniki city buses (2000-2020)
  • 2003: Signature of a contract with KTEL for the service of 12 new intercity lines, which serve 15 new municipalities.
  • 2004: Acquisition of 48 new buses for the newly created lines.
  • 2008: Implementation of a real-time information system for passengers.
  • 2010: Launch of an express bus service connecting the airport to the city center.
  • 2017: Nationalization of the company and liquidation of the old structure.
  • 2020: The O.A.S.TH. faces challenges such as air pollution and traffic congestion. The Thessaloniki metro will finally open its first line in the coming years.

The O.A.S.TH. currently serves more than 70 bus lines in Thessaloniki and its outskirts. The network covers the entire city, including central districts, residential areas and industrial areas.
